why is it that in the ‘religion and spirituality’ section of yahooanswers, most people answering are atheists? why do they answer some ‘religion and spirituality’ questions that don’t even concern them?

  • Dharma Nature:

The lack of belief endures because belief in something intangible is by nature weak. Also, atheists tend to have new information to give whereas the source for believers is a few books which can’t ever come up with something new so there’s just not a lot for believers to discuss.

But mostly here I am here to gain insight to spiritual issues. Insular religionists tend to forget about the “& Spirituality” part. This is not a surprise because there is very little spiritual about religion.

  • liwmld:

couple of reasons: this is entertainment to them; they are obsessed with our obsession.

  • Alex:

    Because Atheism is a reality.

  • TriciaG28 SPL Champions 07/08:

Well, we all started OUT as theists but changed our minds after seeing the tolerance people like you were demonstrating and decided the atheist route was more “christian”!

    I’m being sarcastic (obviously)

  • Andrew H:

1 – You don’t have to believe in gods to be spiritual
2 – Many of the questions on here are directed at atheists
3 – We live in a world where Christians interfere with laws and education and Muslims blow people up. We are all affected by religion.

  • aced:

    atheists r stupid

    evolution is trash

  • Wrong time-place context:

look at my answer in the source link and count the thumb-downs, then redefine your concept of “most”

  • Jane's New Avatar:

It makes them feel better to post “Religion is a fairytale” over and over again. Who exactly are they trying to convince? What are they trying to prove, that they’re boring and unimaginative, unemotional and lack empathy? If so,they have exceeded their goals.

  • Lyra B:

Because most religious people don’t have any sensible answers. And it does concern us; the amount of stupidity in the world is a definite cause for concern.

  • The Understanding Wiccan )O(:

well they feel they need to spread common sense though they aren’t doing it the right way… some are answering in an ex(whatever religion they formerly were) and are just stating both sides… i do the same as a wiccan and i respect beliefs while at the same time doing research and at least educating myself so i can help in some way… for example there are a lot of evangelical christians that call me a devil worshiper, saying that i summon demons, curse people, fly on broomsticks, etc., etc… it’s annoying… so ya… now i’ll answer your questions if i see them if i can assist… but i won’t try to convert you… i’ll just speak from experience
as for you people saying religion is a fairy-tale think of how you would feel if the role is reversed… in truth it pisses people off… if you can’t respect a person’s belief then don’t say shit about religion to them… enough said…

  • alwaysright:

they are led by the spirit of satan but also are struggling against god. they want to learn all they can b/c they know humans are a dying breed

  • bahbah:

you believing in god = epic fail. get a life and stop living in a fantasy land.

  • jupiter FIVE:

I wish it didn’t concern me…but the (sad) truth is, religion is sodding everywhere.

  • Crystals:

Try coming around during a different time of day. We come, complete our mission, (chaos, sarcasm and humour) and then we go.

  • Saved by Grace:

lack of belief = lack of compassion

  • Alexis de Tocqueville:

How can you be a spiritual atheist? If you think you are, you’re just kidding yourself and influenced by some stupid fad like “secular humanism” I mean please.

  • Vajrasiddha:

    because i eat oranges

  • Somebody else's Grandpa:

Just so they can jump down the throat of every person who asks this question – and to make sure this question gets asked a lot. It’s their whole life’s purpose!

  • P.K.:

Many atheists have a good knowledge of the bible, plus they are able to offer new insights to the average christian….which are not directly related to what a preacher tells them.

for example, I have a very good knowledge of the Mormon religion, and have read many sources which are not ‘church approved’ It is a fact that the LDS church only teaches 1 version of Joseph Smith’s first vision. A ‘True Believing Mormon’ will only be aware of this version.
I know that there are at least 2 other version of the ‘first vision’, which are contradictory – and I can cite sources for people to check out this info.

  • Madara:

As the other post mentioned were just here to answer some questions directed at us and btw this section doesn’t say exclusive for the true believers and religious people only.

  • Leonard:

This is a good forum to remind the believers that their views are not unchallenged.

  • NicoMach:

Nobody ever said, lack of belief=lack of reasoning skills…for an obvious reason…ha ha. Most people on Yahoo answers realize that there is no difference between a kid finally realizing that Santa Claus isn’t real and finally realizing WHY they came to this conclusion. Even Christians will admit that Santa Clause isn’t real. When I ask them, they say it’s because they never saw him, or that their parents were the ones who put the gifts there. Wait a sec! This sounds a lot like… Santa wasn’t there=no proof of God and Parents put gifts there=reality is understood with observation (i.e science) not belief. I hope this enlightens those of you who still ”believe in Santa Clause”.

  • jefferyspringer57@sbcglobal.net:

Most (a majoprity 50+%). Where did you get the info from for the statement? Atheism is a ‘religion’ too even though I disagree with it. Man is as a god; then again that point is part of the present division in USA christianity!

  • Dave RC:

Atheists need our prayers, especially the holy rosary, so they can know that God exists. The rosary is God’s preferred means for obtaining conversions. See the following promises.

    The rosary is explained here:

The fifteen promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary:
    1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.
    2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
    3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against Hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
    4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
    5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
    6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life.
    7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
    8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in Paradise.
    9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
    10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
    11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
    12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
    13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire Celestial Court during their life and at the hour of death.
    14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only Son, Jesus Christ.
    15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

    God bless!

  • Gandalf Again:

    This section isn’t FOR R&S. It’s ABOUT R&S.

  • Mortal Chortle:

Because I’m bored. Enjoy me. I don’t know what the other atheists are doing here.

  • Athene:

Why do humans post in the cats section?

  • Keithzworld:

So you are saying that it is no concern of an atheist, when laws like proposition 8 are past? When in turn, many gay citizens of California are actually atheist themselves. How is that not a concern. And yes Proposition 8 exists because of religion and religious ideals. Why shouldn’t that concern us?

Is it not a concern to us that there are STILL to this day, countries in the world that haven’t separated state and church? How can you say that doesn’t concern us?

Does it not concern us that person’s going into political office are required to pledge a religious oath? Considering that one day some of these people could be atheist, why wouldn’t that concern us?

Of course it concerns us, the theists are the majority, are in legal power and make terrible decisions that effect the entire world and yet YOU think it doesn’t concern us. Wake up!

  • conundrum_dragon:

Probably for the same reason that every other Christian on this site condemns them to hell, as if they have the right to judge anyone.

  • auntb93:

You really don’t know what the beliefs are of the people who answer. Even when they say what they believe, you can’t tell whether or not that’s true. Also, the mix of people signed on changes from minute to minute and day to day.

But it may indeed be true that there are more atheists here than in the ordinary situation. As an atheist myself, I am drawn to this category because the topic is of interest to me. I couldn’t care less about cars or celebrities, for example. I have a lot of books about religion and spirituality, and have spent a good bit of my time on the topics since my undergraduate days at least.

  • Martin (atheist):

The same reason the only people answering question in the Cats section are people, because we are interested in talking about religion and spirituality, and considering laws are made based on them, they do concern us. But really, there are people answering questions about twilight, they aren’t vampires though.

  • jethom33545:

I think you’re generalizing a bit.And the person answering gets to choose what’s relevant to them.Saying “christian only, etc” usually guarantees many atheist answers,as it should.

  • Rai A:

Atheists are attracted here answering all the “Atheist” questions.

    Ask & they come….

  • Thomas T:

because we love the truth, not man made fairy tails

  • rabdomness:

because we have more free time since we are not required to attend mass and there are lots of spiritual atheists! you don’t have to be deluded to acknowledge supernatural forces and non-godlike entities and that the id is of the supernatural!
